Suniti and Suruci. Now one was five years, one was four years. One day Suruci had son Uttama. Maharaja was sitting on the throne. The boy claimed the throne and the mother also sat on the throne. That time Dhruva, son of Suniti, came. He was 5 years and a half. He wanted to sit on the throne of his father. But Suruci said:
"No! You cannot sit. Only my son must sit. If you have to sit you must be born to me".
He was not allowed so he became angry. He was beating and weeping. He went away to his mother. Mother asked:
"What happened?"
"Mother! I was not allowed to sit on the throne of my father. Suruci, my stepmother, never allowed me to sit. And my father never spoke even one word about it. So I have come here now."
"You are born to an unfortunate lady like me. How can you sit on the throne?"
"What shall I do now?"
Then mother said:
"The Lord must bless you."
"How to get the Lord?"
"You must do penance."
"Yes. I will go to forest now and do penance."
Mother said:
"Boy. You are very little, young boy. You cannot go there. Don't go now! After getting your age more than 12 then you can go. Not now."
"No. No. I will go now."
So saying he ran away from the house and called for Narada. Narada came to this boy Dhruva and said:
"Boy! Where are you going now?"
"I want to do penance."
"What penance can you do? All the beasts and birds will eat away your flesh. You have nothing. No chair, no table, no seat, no mat. Nothing to eat, nothing to drink. You will die. What penance can you do?"
"No, No! I will do penance! How to do penance? Tell me."
"Not now. At a later stage you can come."
"No. I will go now."
Then Narada thought: "He must be taught." Then he said:
"Yes. I will tell you because you are son of a ksatriya. You are determined to go."
He says:
(verse 4:20)
"Either I must die or I must get a boon."
Then Narada told the mantra:
om namo bhagavate vasudevaya
"You repeat this mantra. Daily you must reduce your food so much. Reduce second month, third month, fourth month, fifth month and sixth month. You must be standing on one leg and counting the namam."
He did like that.
He said:
"At the sixth month, last of these months, you will see some light in your heart and when you open your eyes the Lord will be standing before you. Whatever you want to ask you can ask."
So he did. After six months he saw the light and opened his eyes and saw the Lord standing. But he didn't know what to do next. The Lord could understand it. He touched the head of Dhruva with the conchshell. Touched. When he touched he was very happy. Now he repeated the Sanskrit prayers and it was very fine prayer and after hearing this the Lord asked:
"What do you want?"
Then the boy said:
"I don't want anything."
" How is it? You have come here. You started penance only for your father's throne. To sit on your father's throne."
Now he said:
"I don't want this."
Now he came here. He wanted this throne but:
sthanabhilasi tapasi sthito 'ham
tvam praptavan deva-munindra-guhyam
kacam vicinvann api divya-ratnam
svamin kritartho 'smi varam na yace
"My Lord. I have come here and started my penance for one thing: my father's throne. But now when you appeared, when I saw your face and your body, I forgot to ask any boon from you. I am fully satisfied. I am fully happy. I don't want anything."
kacam vicinvann api divya-ratnam
"I came here for a piece of glass but, whereas I got the gem I don't want the glass. Gem has come."
Then he said:
"No. No. You will get that also. You father is coming here. He will give you whole state and you will sit on the throne and enjoy for 36000 years. After that you will be taken to Vaikuntha."
There is Dhruva's naksatra or the pole star. On the north side now also the pole star is there. All the people travelling by steamers can be guided by the help of that pole star.
Like this mantra. The power of mantra is extraordinary. You cannot imagine it. If people with full faith perform mantra, that mantra will never go astray. Definitely he will get the result that was sanctioned to him, that was given to him, that he should have the fruit.
Now many people do mantra. Though they repeat mantra, the Maha-mantra, this Maha-mantra they repeat but many complain: "We don't feel any difference." How can you feel? When Mahaprabhu went to Kasi, on his way to Vrindavan he was invited to a sannyasi's gathering at Kasi. A brahmin belonging to Maharashtra invited all the sannyasis; advaitavadi sannyasis of Kasi, several thousands. And he has also invited Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu went at last and he washed his feet and sat there, there only. Then Prakasananda Sarasvati, the leader of all sannyasis came and told:
"Swamiji. Is there not a seat for you? Feet wash water is there. You should not sit there. You come."
He took his hand and took him and asked him to sit. He sat. Then, Prakasananda Sarasvati asked:
"You are a sannyasi. We are also sannyasis. We belong to same sannyas asrama. There are four ashramas. Brahmacarya ashrama, grihastha ashrama, vanaprastha ashrama and sannyasi ashrama. You are a sannyasi. You should come to us. You should talk to us. You never talk. You never make reply."
Then he said:
"Yes. Your cult is little advanced or superior to our cult, so I must sit here and you may sit there."
"No. No. Sannyasis are all one. Living as sannyasi, sannyasi is prohibited, , prohibited to sing, prohibited to beat and prohibited to dance. Nrtya, bhagya(?) and gana. And you are being a sannyasi. You are dancing. You are singing. You are beating drums. This is not a dharma of a sannyasi. A sannyasi must not do this."
Then Chaitanya Mahaprabhu said:
"Yes. When I took sannyas I went to my guru.
"Gurudev, please tell me what shall I do?"
Then guru said:
"I will give you a mantra. You repeat this mantra."
"After sometime by repeating this mantra I became mad. I am an intelligent scholar and I never dance and never sing like ordinary people. I will always make my mind steady. Anything nonsense I won't do and now I cannot. I came to my guru:"
kiba mantra dile gosani kiba tara bala
"Gurudeva! What mantra have you given to me? By repeating that mantra I have become mad."
Then Gurudeva said:
"Yes. That mantra is only mantra that you have to repeat."
Mahaprabhu said:
prabhu kahe - kahilan ei mahamantra
Then my Guru said:
"This is mahamantra"
iha japa giya sabe kariya nirbandha
"All of you, you must repeat this mantra."
iha haite sarba-siddhi haibe sabara
"Then you will get siddhi. All your desires will be fulfilled".
sarva-ksana bala 'ithe bidhi nahi ara
"You always repeat this mantra. No rules, no regulations necessary."
ki bhojane ki sayane kiba jagarane
"At the time of taking food, while sleeping, while taking bath or doing other works you could engage your hands and legs but the tongue has nothing to do, so the tongue must repeat namam."
nama vinu kali-kale nahi ara dharma
"There is no other way except harinama. You have to do:"
nama bhaja nama cinta nama kara sara
nama vina kali-kale jati nahi ara (?)
"You have to do namam. You have to repeat namam. You have to sing namam. Your mind, your tongue, your hands, your legs - all this will be engaged in the service of namam. Other people may think that you have gone mad. But you have not gone mad. The mantras result may be outside as a mad man's activities. No! It is not mad man's activities."
This they heard, Prakasananda Sarasvati and one thousands, two thousands sannyasis there.
Now they say: "All right. We will do namam. But why don't you listen to Vedanta. The sannyasi's duty is:
(verse 17:19)
These sannyasis have nothing but kaupina, danda and a kamandalu. They are fortunate because their energy is being spent in repeating and dancing and singing the name of Divine Lord.
Then he said:
"Why don't you talk about Vedanta?"
"Yes. If you allow me I will talk."
Then he told them Vedanta for seven days. After hearing Vedanta they said:
"Yes. We quite understand it. Now I am calling to our Acarya, Sankaracarya. The Vedanta meaning maybe little different. And whatever you say is also right. We cannot totally give up Sankaracarya, because as sampradayika sannyasis we will follow him. At the same time we will follow your instructions. From today onwards we will repeat harinama."
Since then they started harinama and to that sannyasis for repeating aham brahmasmi, tat tvam asi, and one other mantra mantras they repeat. They never said Rama, Krishna, Govinda, Acyuta, Vamana, Narasimha. No. These names they never repeated. But now all of them began to sing the names. Now in sannyasa's asrama all the sannyasis are repeating.
Mahaprabhu said: "I have got a big burden. Now a gift I brought was distributed to all in Kasi. I am very happy. I have done one great service to the people of Kasi and Benares."
So saying he returned to Puri.
Now here. Mantra. Mahaprabhu says:
"This is mantra."
What is mantra? Mantra should have OM bija. OM. And then they have got namah or svaha. Namah or svaha. That is vaidhika mantra. But here there is no OM, there is no svaha or namah. How can it be a mantra? Mahaprabhu says:
"This is maha-mantra. This is Maha-mantra. You repeat this maha-mantra."
Then all the people repeated this maha-mantra. Now our doubts are clear because this maha-mantra separately we never find it and whereas om or namah are not there. But it is there! It is included in it. It is not visible. It is included in it. If you repeat mantra you will get the result. You have to follow the rules and regulations of it. And you must follow the restrictions of food. You should take only vegetarian food. Then you will get the benefit of repeating namam. There are vaidhik mantras and other are called agama-mantras. Agamas
(verse 22:18)
Agama is nigama is ...
Agamas, almost all the vaisnavas they follow more the agamas. There is no difference between agama and nigama. Agama pancaratra, agama, Narada . Narada has propagated these mantras. Those were spoken by Mahadeva and Parvati heard it and that was appreciated by Vasudeva. These mantras in this yuga, they are more effective. Narada-pancaratra it is called. Now we must follow this mantra. And that mantra is also there. It is bhur bhuvah svah - gayatri. And there gayatris or guru-gayatri or gaura-gayatri or brahma-gayatri or kama-gayatri. These are only for Vaisnavas and they should follow actively all the principles, all the rules or regulations, unless mantra will never give you result.
But whereas maha-mantra ... suppose you are not in a position or you have forgotten it, you could not able to follow those restrictions, you do it, you repeat namam - the namam will help you, will purify you. In the next step you will never commit any wrong. This is the mantra. We say we are giving mantras but this mantra should be humbly accepted.
Yet Mahaprabhu, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu from Navadvip then he lost his father. To celebrate his father's ceremony he went to Gaya. Where is Gaya? Where there is vishnu-pada-padma and phalgu nadi. There they should perform this sraddha, pitri-sraddha. And then he performed and suddenly he met Iswara puri, Madhavendra puri's disciple. And these mahatmas are in the channel, parampara channel. Mahaprabhu fell flat at his feet:
"Sir, I beg you. I am under the influence of this maya, gunamayi maya. Please bless me so that I can be free from it."
Then gurudeva gave that mantra. He repeated that mantra. One night he saw Lord Krishna with a flute in his hand. And from other day, he told to his students - one hundred students followed him - that:
"I am not going to Navadvip. I will go to Vrindavan. If you want to come to Vrindavan you come with me." Then they requested:
"Sir, our studies are not completed. You please go after completing it."
Then Mahaprabhu returned. And since then Mahaprabhu asked all his students:
"I will never speak whatever I spoke previously. If you want to learn you must go to other professors, there you will study. But I am not going to tell you this. I want to tell you:
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare"
Mahaprabhu has followed this. The system - he has followed it.
Acarya. Who is an Acarya?
acinoti yah sastrartham acare sthapayaty api
svayam acarate yasmad acaryas tena kirttitah
Now people, due to ignorance, disapprove this mantra. There was one time when mantras were not necessary but after some time mantras were necessary - in Treta yuga, and in Dvapara-yuga mantras also necessary. In Kali-yuga most necessary.
mananat trayate iti mantrah
We can control our mind through mantra. If we repeat mantra our mind will be controlled. If mind is not controlled then the mind is controlled by buddhi - intellect, and intellect is controlled by maya. If the Lord controls the intellect, the intellect (inaudible) the mind, a mind orders to all these organs and whatever the person does it is perfect. Now to have it we are reckless. We do mantra recklessly. Seriously. It is in life. It is life giving power there. It can change our past prarabdha. What is prarabdha? Whatever we have done in our past life, that, after this body goes away, we have to suffer or enjoy, an accumulated fruit that we have. Now if you repeat mantra you can destroy this prarabdha easily.
yad-brahma-saksat-krti-nisthayapi vinasam ayati vina na bhogaih
apaiti nama! sphurena tat te prarabdha-karmeti virauti vedah
We continue the brahma-jnana and we always remember or think of that brahman. Continuously 24 hours we will be thinking brahman. And the result is:
brahma-bhutah prasannatma na socati na kanksati
samah sarvesu bhutesu
These things must come. How? When we repeat that mantra which gives me equality. And I am not afraid of suffering and I have no desires and I will be happy. In that brahma-jnanam knowledge we can have this. But that cannot stop my prarabdha. But if I repeat namam
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
It is raga-mantram. It is called maha-mantra. Who calls it maha-mantra? Lord Chaitanya calls it maha-mantra. He says:
"I gave you this mantra. I asked you to repeat this mantra. By repeating this mantra result will be this."
If you have no faith, you go reckless, you don't care and mind is travelling, hands are travelling, legs are travelling and mind is dancing and singing and enjoying and he says harinama: "hare krishna, hare krishna" he will never get any result. Mahaprabhu told how to follow this strictly. You must develop time. Suppose now you have time, ten minutes, one round or two rounds and this keeps your mind on the nama. Mind must remember it and ears must hear it and tongue must repeat it. Kirtana, sravana, smarana. Continuous. You repeat Hare Krishna, you hear Hare Krishna, and you remember Hare Krishna. Your attention cannot be deviated. Now attention, if deviated you will never get the result. You will become mad. So you must be very careful.
Now there is an competition by people who possess malice, malice.
kama esa krodha esa rajo-guna-samudbhavah
mahasano maha-papma viddhy enam iha vairinam
They are all under the influence of maya. We are all under the influence of maya. We have six enemies. One is the kama, the cupid, krodha, anger, lobha, greed and ambition, moha, forgetfulness. Fifth is that we are proud. We are proud. Too much proud. Arrogant. Sixth is matsarya, malice. We possess these symptoms. These are our masters. In my body these are six masters. These six masters, with a rope in hand, one side kama drags, another side krodha, with a rope it drags. Lobha drags, moha drags and matsarya drags. All six enemies. Six ropes - one person. They are dragging one person. To whose order he can follow? He says: "do my service." Kama says: "Do my service." Krodha, anger says: "Do my service". Whose service he can do? So the fellow must die. So that there, there we should use kama
krsna seva kamarpana
We must offer this kama, only to offer yat karosi yad asnasi whatever you eat, whatever you take bath, whatever you see, whatever you do - everything offer to the Lord
krodha bhakta-dvesi jane
Those who are very angry. Anger to all. That anger should only be utilized to one who fights with a devotee. The enemy of a devotee should be crushed. Your anger should be used there.
krodha bhakta-dvesi jane
lobha sadhu-sange hari-katha
As you are greedy, your ambition, your desire - only one desire is "I must have association of a sadhu to hear from him the nectar." What is that nectar? About the glories of the Lord one must have greediness to hear.
krodha bhakta-dvesi jane
lobha sadhu-sange hari-katha
moha ista labha vine
Forgetfulness. That moha. Ista labha. What is my Ishta? Ishta is my Lord. I cannot get the Lord so my mind is not steady.
mada krsna guna gane
With arrogance for always repeating nama and dancing. He says: "I am dancing."
kadaham yamuna-tire namani tava kirtayan
He says: "When I can dance at the shore of Yamuna river." Then they can do that. He is ambitious or he is arrogant to do this. This arrogance can be applied in the service of the Lord. And this is how we can control this kama, krodha, lobha, moha, mada and matsarya.
kama esa krodha esa rajo-guna-samudbhavah
mahasano maha-papma viddhy enam iha vairinam
This kama and krodha devour the whole world. They have such a big mouth. Very, very big mouth. Whole world it can devour. Now we have to conquer it. How you can conquer it? Only you must always speak Hare Krishna Hare Krishna. Hear in your ears: "I am repeating
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare"
Sixteen namams. Thirty-two letters. Complete.
But here he has not completed: "hare krishna hare krishna krishna krishna, hare krishna hare krishna hare krishna, hare krishna, hare krishna." Where is it?
Now how many?
"16 rounds. I have completed 16 rounds."
You are deceiving yourself. You are deceiving the Lord. And deceiving the Vaisnavas. And deceiving who gave you that nama. You are not serious. Can you count your money like that? If you are allowed to count your money can you speedily do it? And you have done it three times, or four times to count money, count whether it is correct or not. And your namam. "Later. O, Guru has given me namam. I have to Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna " No. No. Seriously you must do - you will get the result. Don't do seriously - nothing. In counting currencies, counting collections if you are committing wrong you will be removed from the service. There millions of rupees you have to count. You will drive away. In counting Hari namam if you are reckless you will never receive any result.
You should feel for this. He says that you should do namam regularly, and with faith, and in submissive way. Submit yourself to the Lord. And Lord:
yogyata vicare kichu nahi pai tomara karuna sara
You must beg Gurudeva:
krpa-bindu diya, koro'ei dase, trnapekha ati hina
"Please bless me. A drop of your mercy through which I can be blessed. Through your blessing I can perform namam. I do not know how to do namam. You must bless me."
This sort of teaching is necessary now. Because so many people are now competing that: "We will give you namam. We will give you mantra."
For what? For money or if not money some woman or a name. "I want name." For that they give it.
But previously all the devotees though they were (inaudible) they were not interested to give namam to others. Because if they give nama mantram to others they must take the whole responsibility upon their head. All the sin they committed they must enjoy. They have taken the responsibility. Just like a boy who cannot walk, who cannot sit, who cannot talk, who cannot do anything. The parents take the responsibility. The nurse or the mother takes the responsibility to maintain that boy. We are ignorant. When we take namam the guru has got the responsibility to hold whole time in the service of the boy. But now, those who give harinamam they also don't want it and those who take, they also don't want it. Now it has become a mockery. Mocker. Because no use. No result you get. So why? Why? Waste of time. No! You must think all this seriously. You must know this serious, at best you know whether you cultivate it or not. You must see this.
And those who now compete: "We want to give nama. We want to give nam!" Now the ignorant people they say: "Yes. Yes. Yes." And they go and take nama. Now they are in hell and still they take harinamam and go to still deeper, deeper, deeper, deeper Sutala, Mahatala, Patala. Go to Patala. Seven worlds. And there last world. Tapana. 65 or 66 punishing rooms are there.
These are the things that we never hear of it, we never understand of it, we never ask any question of it. For all our questions the solution that I have told you must follow. It is not for mine
(break - end of front side of tape)
(The Divine Name) In your language. And everybody should keep one book to read of the process of namam. Perfect. It is perfect. And the result you can know it. With quotations. With all the sastra or vedic quotations. All quotations are given. You have given quotations?
"Yes."
Good. Those quotations are most important. Nobody knows these quotations. Everybody wants to give harinama. It is a business. It is a business. They want to do business. Everybody wants to do business. But actually they should know this. Now we see the world. It is Kali-yuga. In Kali-yuga the Lord has given very simple experience, simple trial, simple action, simple action - doing namam.
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
The number may be less but the concentration must be full there. If your concentration is not full then you repeat again. You have repeated half and it is deviated, you stop and again you start and do. If you do like that then the mind will be checked and the concentration will be there. Now you do harinamam, you talk and you forget this number and there you have to stop, and again you come to the beginning. This is how the process must be taught. Many of the people don't know the process.
You see, eating vegetarian or nonvegetarian question is not that great. This is great. And automatically if you engage yourself in this namam all these subjects will be subsided and you will take vegetarian and that too you must offer to the Lord. Then you'll learn anything - arcana, puja, tulasi puja. You must keep one tulasi leaf on it and as you come you must say krsna mantra and after that you do acamana and give it to your guru. Guru gayatri you repeat and acamana - finished. Any food you take should do this so that you will have. When you take with the group of nonvegetarian eaters, food eaters. They should not do. You should come away from there. Or you can have separate for this. You have to follow that strictness. The rules we have to follow. If you are
