Srila Bhakti Vaibhava Puri Goswami Maharaja, Slovenia, summer 1998

Subjects: learn from a tree, navada bhakti, raganuga bhakti, Nama-Sankirtan, Narada

Guru Maharaja: Everything we hear about the Absolute Truth or Lord Krishna, his charms, his beauty, his pastimes, will make our ears perfect.

Those are the lions or dogs? What are they?

Golokananda: Dogs. Dogs.

GM: Dogs?

Golokananda: Dogs.

GM:

tam isvaranam paramam mahesvaram
tam devatanam paramam ca daivatam
(svetasvatara upanishad 6.7)

He is the Lord of all the Lords. He is the Supreme Lord of all the devotees and all the demigods, and all the demons. Isvaranam - he is called parameshvara. He is the Lord Krishna.

See his world, his creation - such a beautiful garden. Who has given life to this garden?

The Lord.

In Lord's creation there are so many trees, varieties of trees. These trees always satisfy all other creatures. They give food to all; food to the eyes, food to the ears, food to tongue and food to nose, food to touch. We touch with this body. So, these trees they supply, because they are the life of all life. Without the trees we cannot survive.

We can get oxygen, first thing that will help us to live. If there is no oxygen you cannot live. You cannot survive. You go to more altitudes: no oxygen. No oxygen you can inhale.

So it is all Krishna's blessings. Krishna is the Lord. He is the Lord of all the Lords. He is the creator.

yato va imani bhutani jayante, yena jatani jivanti yatprayantyabhisamvisanti
tadvijijnasasva tadbrahmeti (taittriya upanishad 3.1.3)

This whole universe has come from him. All the beasts and birds and human beings and the trees and creatures and creepers, small, small creepers, different flowers, different fruits, all different in this world have come out from him. From the five elements: earth, water, fire, air and ether. These are the five elements from which the creation, beautiful creation was formed.

Now we are happy, but happy in one sense, to give satisfaction to our all senses. This is not for senses gratification. This is for the gratification of the Lord. Lord will be pleased to see this nature, beautiful nature.

He said to Balarama:

aho esam varam janma
sarva-prany-upajivanam
(Srimad Bhagavatam 10.22.33)

He was going in Vrindavan, and said:

"Brother, you see they are fine creatures.

How they are helpful to all the living beings?

They are helpful. Without them nobody can survive. You see, so much they are tall and give shelter. They give their bark. They give their shade. They give their flowers, give their fruit and give their leaves. Everything we enjoy."

You do not give anything to the tree. You take from the tree.

Is there anybody who gives to the tree?

No.

No, it only survives. It stands there to give you shelter.

Now you are sitting under a tree. You feel happy. No sunrays will fall upon you. And you will be happy. You get cool breeze, you get flowers, the scenery. The trees are helping us. To all our senses they help. They make us enjoy. You enjoy.

But, no(laughs), we never enjoy. We cut the trees. We cut the trees. We don't preserve the beauty. We cut the trees. Whenever we want we cut the trees. For our satisfaction we cut the trees. Whenever we want, at the beginning we cut, and branches we cut, and the leaves and everything we cut and enjoy.

A man must learn so many things from the trees. So many things.

It endures. It is tolerant. It is tolerant. It endures the hot sun and the cold winds or… What you call? Ice. In time of winter they are surviving.

Do they want any shelter from you?

You go there and sit under a tree. You will never feel the cold. In the hot season if you sit under a tree you'll never feel hot. Never feel. It will give you shelter. It always gives shelter to us. But, we are not grateful to remember the trees and worship the trees.

You see, in India all the big, big trees they worship. They worship the banyan tree. Very thick leaves and very big tree, very big tree, it can accommodate several thousands people – one tree. One tree. They give branches, those branches they give us roots, they come and they become a trunk of that, many trunks. That tree will have many trunks. It is so much. Wide area of that leaves so much light, (inaudible thickness).

sura mandira taru mula nivasah
shayya bhutala majinam vasah
(bhaja govindam 19)

So it is told sura taru – it is called divine tree. Vata vriksa, vata(banyan). And that vata vriksa gives shelter to so many creatures. Day and night you can sit there and perform anything there.

They never cut that tree. Vata-vriksa they never cut. And even this, what you call, pipal tree, that also they won't cut. They worship it.

asvatthah sarva-vrikshanam
(bhagavad-gita 10.26)

"Among all the trees I am asvattha."

Krishna says in Bhagavat-gita. In all the other trees I am the asvattha tree. So nobody cuts that tree. Nobody cuts.

Here they cut the tree for wood. And there are so many trees, they plant, all this…

(somebody comes)

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

Haribol! Haribol! Haribol! Haribol! Haribol! Now you do a little kirtan. Kirtan. Come near. You sit here. You sit here. You sit here.

(break)

There is no person in this world who doesn't fear. If you want to be fearless you must worship Krishna. You must serve Krishna. You must repeat the Namam of Krishna. And he will give you happiness. He will destroy all your calamities. He will destroy all your sufferings. He will destroy everything not wanted to you. So you repeat always, in day and night, in the summer, in the rainy season, in the cold season. Always. In day always. In night always.

Durlabha..
(Durlabha Manava Janma – Bhaktivinode Thakur)

Your birth is extraordinary and it is after so many births you could get the human life. In this human life don't waste one minute without sankirtan. One minute. Always you must engage. Utilize your time, utilize your maximum time in the service of the Lord.

Because life is not real. It is not real. Now it is - what will happen after a second or minute we cannot say. Because always there are dangers. We can be happy if we conquer the dangers, if we can subdue the dangers.

How can you?

If you say Krishna Nama, if you repeat Krishna Nama then all your dangers will go away.

So always you repeat Krishna Nama

bhaja hure mana sri nanda nandana, abhaya charanara vinda re
(Govinda Das Kaviraja)

Abhaya caranaravinda – his lotus feet. If you remember his lotus feet, and always hear about him, always repeat his glories and his name, you will be fearless. You will never be afraid of anything, even death. Even death God also cannot come and catch your head and take you to Yamaloka, where you get the judgment to again take rebirth.

Sravana, kirtana. You always... Nine forms of devotion. Sravana, kirtana, smarana, pada-sevana, arcana, vandana, dasya, sakhya, atma-nivedana. So, nine forms of devotion. That you must practice. This is not a theory. These are the rules and regulations adopted for those beginners, those who have started to repeat Namam. They should follow the regulations of navada-bhakti. This is called vidhi-bhakti. And there is raga-bhakti. And there is raganuga-bhakti. But unless you are perfect in vidhi-bhakti you cannot come to that stage. So by always repeating, one can observe nine forms of devotion, and, even one form of devotion...

Just like Parikshit Maharaj, he listened the recitation of Srimad Bhagavat from Sukadeva Goswami. In seven days he heard the recitation of Sukadeva Goswami. And after seven days he went away. He went away. Happily he went away.

And Sukadeva Goswami by narrating. He narrated Bhagavatam, which was told to him by his father, Krishna-dvaipayana Vedavyasa. The same Bhagavat he repeated to Parikshit Maharaja. He repeated.

Who?

Sukadeva Goswami repeated.

Smarana. Remembrance.

Who remembered?

Prahlada.

He was punished by his father, because he was uttering worshipping Vishnu.

"He has got faith in Vishnu, so this fellow must be murdered, must be out of life. We must kill him."

So by taking him to the graveyard to kill him, or burn him, or trample him under the feet of the elephant, or throw him into the ocean, or in the flames – he could not die. Because he was always remembering the Lord this Prahlada remained.

And pada-sevana. Lakshmi. Lakshmi is performing the service of the lotus feet of Vishnu. She has done the service of his feet.

Prithu pujane.
(Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu 1.2.265)

And Prithu cakravarti – he performed arcana, puja with all rituals. We do puja. Arcana we do. And this arcana is with 16 varieties. Arcana, puja, they do.

Akrurastvabhivandane.
(Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu 1.2.265)

Akrura – he only by offering his prayers to Lord Krishna.

When he was coming to Vrindavan, on the way he was taking the chariot by which he can bring Krishna and Balarama to Mathura. Now, he was offering this prayer in his heart.

"Oh, Lord. You are here for the last 12 years. I am so ignorant that knowing of your appearance in Vrindavan - one day, it is not far away, very near, one day - I could not come to you and offer my respects. But as now Kamsa asked me to bring Krishna and Balarama:

"He has killed all my demons. Now I will kill him. I will kill both with my own hands. They will believe you. So you go and bring them"

So I am coming now. If you ask

"How, Sir, though you are very near to us you did not come?"

"Yes."

"Now you are coming as a follower of Kamsa. That Kamsa will be happy by killing us. All right. All right. Kamsa has only two days more. After two days he will die. All of us will go.""

So he came and fell flat at the feet of Krishna and Balarama. They were milking the cows and they lifted him and carried him to the house and asked about the news:

"What Sir? What for you have come?"

"This is the Kamsa's proposal."

He narrated the truth. He never hid that:

"He wants to kill both of you in his own soil. So he asked us to go for you."

Then Krishna said:

"Yes. He has only two days more. And after two days - we will go tomorrow, and be there in one day - next day he will die. We will kill him."

So he did it.

And afterwards he fought with Jarasandha. With the army. 17 times he defeated his army and killed all the army. And at last Jarasandha was not killed by Krishna but he was killed by Bhima. Bhima.

He(Jarasandha) was an enemy of Krishna.

He said:

"I must destroy the family of Yadavas. Krishna must be killed. Balarama must be killed. Their family members must be killed."

But he could not kill. At last he died.

prithuh pujane akruras tv abhivandane kapi-patir dasye
(Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu 1.2.265)

And another is kapi-pati, Hanuman. He was the servant of Lord Rama. In life dangers he did not give up the service of Rama. He served him. He wanted to be servant of him. He requested Rama that he should be taken as his servant.

"I am your servant, oh Rama! Wherever you will be, I will be at your feet - wherever I will be, you will be on my head."

Now this picture is always there. Where there is Rama and Sita and Laksmana, there is Hanuman. Without Hanuman nobody can worship Rama. So also Rama the Lord always appears with paraphernalia.

And then:

'tha sakhye 'rjunah
(Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu 1.2.265)

Arjuna as a friend pleased Krishna, and served Krishna and followed the dictations of Krishna.

And then atma-nivedanam. Bali. Bali. Bali – atma-nivedana.

Bali – the emperor, was the master of three worlds. Bhagavan Krishna now became a Vamana, dwarf, and went to the place where Bali was performing Yajna. When he appeared there, Bali Cakravarti said:

"Yes. I am very glad to see you. Very good that you are here. Definitely I understand you have come here to ask something. Ask something! Yes, you can ask anything you want. Anything! If you want my kingdom, or if you want any wealth, or if you want any land or a beautiful girl or anything. I am the master of three worlds. If you want three worlds I will give you."

Then Vamana said:

"No. I am not anxious to have three worlds. I will be satisfied with the three feet, by measurement of my foot, of Bali Cakravarti's land."

Then Bali said:

"How is it? You talk like an old and intelligent man, but you do not know your future. What will you do with that land? You cannot stand on it. What will you eat?"

Then he said:

"I want what I have told."

yadricchayopapannena santushto
(Srimad Bhagavatam 8.19.24)

"I am not greedy. I am not anxious for your property. I will be happy with that."

Then they must take water and Lord must throw his hand down and Bali Cakravarti must pour water in sankalpa. He must do sankalpa.

When sankalpa was done, then the Guru, his spiritual master Sukracarya came and said:

"Don't do sankalpa and don't give what he wants. I know that he is Vishnu. He wants to destroy your empire. There will be no inch of land for you to stand on. Fellow, if you give all your wealth to Vishnu, what will you eat? How can you survive? You are my disciple. I am your Guru.

ajna gurunam hy avicaraniya
(Raghu-vamsa 14.46, Caitanya Caritamrita 2.10.145)

Whatever Guru says you must follow. And if you don't follow you will suffer. You will go to hell."

So saying, there he kept.

Then Bali Cakravarti said:

"Sir, if he is the Lord he is omnipotent and I cannot able to fight with him. Though I fight he will win. I cannot win. Anyhow I have promised that

"Whatever you want I will give."

Now it cannot be denied."

"Then you'll suffer."

So saying he left.

When he has given the water Vamana became very, very big. Wherever you see, with one foot, all the earth he traversed with one foot. And all the ether and air he traversed with another foot.

Then he said:

"Bali, you have promised three feet, but you could give only two feet. Where do I put the other foot?"

He said:

"You put it on my head."

That shows "I and mine". Ahankara and mamakara. Every person has ahankara. That "I" and "mine."

"Three worlds are mine."

"I have taken your three worlds now. Now the truth is I have taken all your belongings and you cannot say:

"This is mine, this you may have."

Nothing. Even your subjects, your people, your family, everything, your palace, everything I have taken. Where shall I put another foot? Another foot where shall I put? How can you give? If you won't give you will suffer."

Then he said:

"Yes. I will give. On my head."

Then he put that foot upon his head. Immediately he asked Garuda to tie him with some rope and he was tied.

Then all his subjects, the Bali Cakravarti's family members, all of them asked:

"Oh, Brahmin. You, as a Brahmin, small short dwarf, you have come and now you expanded. Your volume, and the place... you expanded throughout the three worlds. Anyhow, our Lord Bali gave you three feet. And why have you tied him? It is not an etiquette that you should tie him with a rope again. Because if he didn't preserve his offer or his word then you could tie him. But he has kept his word and gave you three feet. Why should you tie him?"

Even the Prahlada, grandfather of Bali, he also came and he saw.

"Bali, why you are tied? Though you have given three feet and satisfied the Lord why you are tied? Do you know? What are you tied against? That ego you possess that:

"I am the master of three worlds. I will give you three worlds. Three worlds belong to me."

Because you boasted like that now you are tied. Every person who boasts that

"This belongs to me. That belongs to me. This park belongs to me. This sky belongs to me. This country belongs to me. That land, the park, everything belongs to me. I am the Lord of all I survey. Whatever I see as long as I see it, it is mine."

No. It is not yours. It is not yours. As you say out of ignorance:

"Everything is mine. I can give you."

You are not giving any charity to the Lord. Everything belongs to the Lord. He is the master of these worlds and you are his servant. So how can you praise yourself that

"I am the master of three worlds."

Because you expressed your opinion like that, that is why you are tied. You have to suffer for that."

But Lord Vamana heard it. He praised this little attempt.

Because Prahlada is a suddha bhakta, a devotee(laughs), he said:

"The punishment is necessary. Proper punishment was given to you. You are tied, because you boasted that:

"Everything belongs to me. Three worlds belong to me."

That is why, you are now suffering."

Then Vishnumurti said:

(end of front side of tape)

"Sutala loka I will give you. There you can enjoy happiness and be the emperor or king there, as you have surrendered, self surrendered."

Because he surrendered to the Lord. He asked the Lord to put that third foot on his head. That is surrender. Self-surrender to the Lord.

"For that, I will surrender to you. I cannot repay your surrender. I will be the guard of your palace. Every day you'll see me at your gate. I will stand at your walk path. As a guard I will stay."

Now in Sutala-loka Bali Chakravarti is the king there, and Vishnu, Vamana is there standing as the guard of his gate.

So these are the nine types of bhakti, devotion. And one Ambarisha maharaja performed these nine types of bhakti.

Ambarish used to recite with his mouth the glories of the Lord. He used to listen the glories of the Lord through his ears. And take prasadam as the offering. That prasada he has to take with his tongue. With his eyes he used to see the form of Krishna. He was worshipping Krishna always. Though he was the emperor, he left out maintaining or administrating his empire, because members and ministers used to conduct their duty and administer the country. He used to performe yajnas by all rishis. Now he himself is for 24 hours always in Krishna's service. Always Krishna's service. His legs are used to walk for Krishna, hands are used to pick up flowers, make garlands and wash Krishna, and decorate Krishna, give to Krishna padya, arghya, acamaniya, dhupa, dipa, naivedya, tambula. Everything he offered.

By that, whole day is there. Whatever he took, it is offered first. That food he only used to take. He never looked after his family or his empire. All the senses were engaged in the service of the Lord.

And now, I told that one portion, that is sravana, is Pariksita. Kirtana is Sukadeva. Like this.

But one person, he performed nine parts of devotion.

This is called vidhi-bhakti.

And there is one raganuga-bhakti. Ragatmika-bhakti belongs to all the damsels and Vrajavasis of Vrindavan. The Vrajabasis of Vrindavan, they worship Krishna through ragatmika devotion. And if we attain a stage, purified stage, by practicing vidhi-bhakti, then only we will be eligible to follow one of these raga-bhaktas.

One is sevaka, service, surrender, service who is doing, dasya-bhakti. And one is sakhya-bhakti – as a friend they treat Krishna. And another who treats Krishna as his boy(vatsalya). And another who treats Krishna as the master of her body, so there she offers everything in the service of the Krishna(sringara). That stage... but to realize that stage means he is a pure and perfect in cultivating this bhakti. First by cultivating this bhakti. And out of these nine bhakti portions if one repeats Namam, hears Namam, remembers Namam, by that he will attain perfection. At first aparadhas, 10 aparadhas, offenses are there. But they will go, and then bhava-bhakti will come. Bhava-bhakti. Then prema-bhakti. And this bhava-bhakta is eligible to perform raganuga-bhakti. He is eligible because his mind and his intellect and his thoughts, all merge with service of the Lord always. Always. Day and night he must do hard labour and practice.

Not by theory! The science: one portion is theoretical, and the other portion is practical. Theoretically you can hear and you will be happy: "Oh, very good." But it should be finalized. It should be realized by practice. Not by theory you can get it. So it is very, very difficult.

It is told that bhava-bhakti... And bhava-bhakti is… I forgot the slokam...

Vishnu Maharaja: ksantir avyartha-kalatvam!

GM: Aha.

ksantir avyartha-kalatvam
viraktir mana-sunyata
asa-bandhah samutkantha
nama-gane sada rucih

asaktis tad-gunakhyane
pritis tad-vasati-sthale
ity adayo 'nubhavah syur
jata-bhavankure jane
(Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu 1.3.25-26)

If that bhava has come to anybody, he will be always engaged. Without rest he is repeating nama-kirtana. That bhavankura, that stage must come. It should come naturally! Naturally it must come!

But to reach that stage one must practice Namam. Among the nine methods, Namam is the surest and the simplest, and it will destroy all the dust of your heart and purify it.

ceto darpana marjanam
(siksataka 1)

This heart is like a mirror. Any dust on a mirror will never give you the image, and you cannot see the face perfect, because it is full of dust. And you must clear the dust. So also, if you want to reach the Lord and serve the Lord, your first duty is to do Hari-namam. Because, it is Hari-namam... And

tasmad gurum prapadyeta
(Srimad Bhagavatam 11.3.21)

That is why, to have the assistance from a Guru and blessings from a Guru, he must submit to Guru. And from a Guru he can get the strength to perform 64 types of bhakti. This bhakti, sadhana bhakti is of 64 types. Regularly he will do it, and do Namam.

Gradually he must give importance to Nama-sankirtan. Hear Nama-sankirtan then

tad-anuragi jananugami
(Upadesamrita 8)

Then the smarana.

These things simultaneously: he must be remembering - he must adjust himself with the meaning of Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare.

The meaning will be realized when the heart becomes clearer, clearer. And it will be realized. Clearer.

bhaktih paresanubhavo viraktir anyatra
(Srimad Bhagavatam 11.2.42.)

He will have detachment, he will have understanding, realization and he will do the bhakti. That is wanted.

And he must follow it, carefully, very carefully.

Without sadhana...

'sadhya-vastu' 'sadhana' vinu keha nahi paya
(Sri Caitanya Caritamrita, 2.8.197)

Many people say many things. Like bharavahi(opposite of saragrahi), means: from here 2 lines, from there two lines, from there two lines, and here few words, there few words – they cannot come to a conclusion, perfect conclusion. So they must get their Guru, serve a Guru and surrender to a Guru.

diksha-kale bhakta kare atma-samarpana
(Sri Caitanya Caritamrita, Antya 4.192)

The Guru makes his body, eternal and spiritual body. It will be spiritualized to him.

sei deha kare tara cid-ananda-maya
aprakrita-dehe tanra carana bhajaya
(Sri Caitanya Caritamrita, Antya 4.193)

Through the blessings of his Guru one can purify himself. That purification depends upon the submission and the mercy, causeless mercy of the Guru.

It is difficult. (inaudible)

In those days, in those days you read our, what you call? Prema-bhakti-candrika.

VM: Narottama das!

GM: Narottama Thakur. Narottama's period is not now. It has gone. In those days mind was not so much polluted. Now as the Kali developed, mind is being covered and polluted very much.

There he says:

krsna seva kamarpana, krodha bhakta-dvesi jane,
lobha sadhu-sange hari-katha.
moha ista labha vine, mada krsna guna gane,
niyukta koribo yatha tatha
(prema-bhakti-candrika 2.10)

Those sadhanas are very difficult now. Very difficult.

That was the period, it will be now more that 200 years back. In that period people had some faith. And they were truthful in practice, and they used to practice all. And to them only he said all this. Not to ordinary.

Because to hear about Krishna, to practice about Krishna... A bound soul, a soul who is under the grip of the influence of Maya, cannot do the service. It is very difficult.

Now always you can repeat Namam, but you must depend upon the Guru's spiritual mercy. He must give that blessing. Through his blessings only you can develop. If not, it is very difficult, very difficult.

He was an Acarya of our Guru Parampara. Narottama Thakur. He has prepared like water ... (inaudible)... In our country in hot season one man must give cold water, he must distribute to all. Those who pass by, the travelers, they come for it. And there may be so many. After every 10 or 5 km there will be cold water distribution center. Voluntarily they do. They won't take remuneration from anybody. They will give equal water to all.

Like that Narottama Thakur. It was his kripa. He established sankirtan. When his sankirtan starts, he dances. His legs dance, his body dance. He is always with all the symptoms of devotion.

After him we cannot see any such person while performing the sankirtan... He was a good singer and performed sankirtan with mridanga. Now we don't find that. Now days are very, very dark days. Darkness is growing more and more. They cannot take strong belief upon anybody. Because this Yuga is such there cannot be...

(break in tape)

As a caitya Guru he inspires, and as a siksa Guru he guides, and diksa... Then will be diksa. So they are all Gurus. But two Gurus are important: diksa Guru and siksa Guru. Anyhow we have to struggle on this line.

Whatever we feel, out of emotion we feel. And more our ladies feel, more about Radha-Krishna bhakti. Because they are emotional, more emotional. That emotion must be permanent.

(something is happening)

See people. People worship dogs and become dogs.

(in background: "pusti ga")

See. They never think of anything. They think life is only to worship a dog. They are worshipping dogs.

(inaudible – foreground talk of translators)

So now they are worshipping dogs. They never worship God.

In this world what can you see? How much they feel happiness?

They wash it. They carry it. They give it food. They die with such severe attachment. They also

yam yam vapi smaran bhavam tyajaty ante kalevaram
tam tam evaiti kaunteya sada tad-bhava-bhavitah (Bhagavad-Gita 8.6)

Because always he is looking after dogs, following dogs day and night, at the time of death he will think of that dog and die. And whatever he thinks, again in next birth, he will be a dog. He will become a dog. Man now, who worships dogs, will become a dog. (inaudible) Man will become a dog and dog will become a man. The reciprocation will be always there.

See, what is their life?

ahara-nidra-bhaya-maithuna
(hitopadesa 25)

Eat, drink, sleep and enjoyment, self-enjoyment, physical enjoyment. For this so much energy, so much wealth, so much everything. Only dog is God for them. They protect him so that they are protected by him. They do not think of God. They have no brain. They cannot realize this. (Laughs) They have no brain. No brain. So inject, give injection to the brain. They cannot think. (inaudible)

Now you must do sankirtan "Hare Krishna Hare Krishna", Nama-sankirtan, so that they may hear. They may hear and they may purify. No use of talking. Now we have talked. Now do bhajan. Maharaja! Do bhajan. All of you do bhajan. Nama-kirtan. Maharaja. Govinda Jaya, Gopala Jaya or maha-mantra.

(nama-sankirtan - break in recording)

VM: Jay Om Vishnupada 108 Srila Bhakti Vaibhava Puri Goswami Maharaja ki – jay!

GM: This is how we can imagine that Maharaja, when he went to America, there he used to sit in a park like this.

Nobody comes.

Hare Krishna maha-mantra he used to repeat for half an hour. Nobody asks. Now they are laughing. They are going. They are laughing. One young woman and young fellow are laughing. Seeing this they are laughing.

Then also, due to that this is the place of enjoyment, sexual enjoyment they do. They are doing like dogs. And they throw a ball or they throw some articles. It will be exercise (inaudible). They will wash the dogs. They do not know anything about God.

VM: They don't wash the deity. They wash the dog. (laughs)

GM: Yes

(inaudible)

Golokananda: They worship dog as God.

GM: There is a body. They show their body. To preserve the body, to keep the body is a yagna. They are worse than dogs. Even dog has some faith. That faith also they don't have. The dogs, because they protect them, they have some faith. They always follow their masters with all sincerity. That faith also this fellow hasn't got. The Lord has given you human birth.

What have you done? What have you done?

You do hard labour. You earn. This is life. This is the life.

To them what can you do?

Now they have willingly or unwillingly heard the Divine Name. That will go inside and it will act. It is like poison or the nectar. Whether you eat poison willingly or unwillingly it will act. And so also the nectar. Without knowing that this is the nectar, you accept the nectar, and it will have its effect.

So that is our duty. Mahaprabhu has preached the Namam.

"Go and do Namam!"

This is our preaching.

What preaching?

Repeat Namam. All benefit.

These men who are in the figure of human beings, they hear, the dogs hear, the cat hears, and to whom they love they hear(the Divine Name). Now we are doing greatest service to the nation by repeating Namam. There can be no comparison to such a service. By the devotees, by the pure devotees, if they sing

namany anantasya hata-trapah pathan
guhyani bhadrani kritani ca smaran
gam paryatams tushta-mana gata-sprihah
kalam pratikshan vimado vimatsarah
(Srimad Bhagavatam 1.6.26.)

See, Narada was roaming alone singing the glories of the Lord, and remembering all his pastimes in the mind. In loud sound he repeated the Namam, and he was travelling throughout the world.

That was his duty. Because, Narada, in his previous life was a gandarva. Gandarvas sing. They dance, they sing. So Narada went with gandharvas when there was a gathering before the Lord Brahma. All of them have come. Narada was playing, but playing with them(women) he forgot himself.

Now he was cursed:

"You become a servant-maid's boy."

So in next birth Narada became a boy of servant-maid.

He was 5 or 6 years age.

And what the mother brings?

After cleaning the utensils whatever remnants they leave, those things she brings and feeds the boy.

And fortunately in caturmasya for four months the sadhus stayed in that village. Because this is rainy season no travelling is convenient. So they halted there for four months.

And this boy, whatever the mother feeds him, the boy will eat and sit with the Sadhus.

He did not know what Sadhus speak. He was young boy – he did not know. But he was very fond of sitting with them. And he used to sit and listen. He doesn't know anything. Whatever they utter he only listens. But he is very fond of them and from morning till evening he won't go away.

Seeing this sort of devotion in a small boy, the saints used to give him some food to eat, and let him clean the cloth, and do some service. Like that he did service for four months.

After four months these Sadhus are going away. Caturmasya is over. Now the path is clear. No rain. So they can travel.

But this boy said:

"I will come with you."

He was crying to follow them.

Then they said:

"No. No. No. No. You don't come with us. You are the one boy of your mother. Who will look after you? Mother is here. She takes care of you, she gives food to you, clothing, and she cleans, gives all accommodation, everything. She looks after you. You don't come with us. If you come with us who will look after you? Nobody will look. So stay here."

Then he was crying bitterly, and at last he sat.

After some years the mother was bitten by a snake. She died. When mother died Narada thought:

"I lost my mother. Nobody will feed me. Nobody will take care of me. Nobody will take responsibility. Nobody will ask: "Have you taken food?" Nobody is there to ask me. Now I am free."

So he started for Himalayas. He went and saw the big pipal tree. Under that pipal tree he sat and recited those mantras they used to repeat and alone he fasted. He never thought of food. Whatever available, some leaves or some water, or if somebody gives anything, he was taking there.

And now he heard the voice from the sky. Somebody was telling:

"Oh, boy! In this life you cannot see God. Next life you will see. In this life you should always repeat the Namam and travel all over the world. And whenever the last days come, automatically you will leave the body, and get a spiritual body as a devotee of the Lord Vishnu."

Then he did all that.

Then he said:

gam paryatams tushta-mana gata-sprihah
(Srimad Bhagavatam 1.6.26.)

He was travelling all over the world singing the glories of the Lord and his Nama. And all his pastimes he used to remember. He never utters(silently), but he utters loudly the name of Krishna, Govinda, Acyuta, Vamana, Nrsimha – loudly. And he travels. And he spends his time till the death.

Automatically the death comes. He should not take poison to end his life. He should not commit suicide. It must come of its own accord.

He waited and travelled. At last the body fell down and immediately he went to Vaikuntha. Vaikuntha wherefrom he need not come back.

Now he was born as Narada. 24 hours, the whole life he has no limit of time. Always he is alive. He is alive. And always he is travelling in the space. Space. There is a space. This is a mass. It has attraction...(end of recording)
